FINALLY a collection that completely embodies my entire highschool existence. Dark makeup, babydoll dresses, and hair that's been dyed so many times, it looks like a fruit roll up. Ed Meadham and Ben Kirchoff nailed it, right down to the heart stickers on the credit sheets. They even opened the show with an old Courtney Love interview. Yeah, I think it's safe to say that the nineties are moshing their way back into the fashion world with full force, and that's like totally cool with me or whatever.
But aside from all the gimmicky goth/riot girrrl/ 90's princess stuff that was going on, the clothing demanded some serious respect. Silks and chiffons in pretty pastels were concocted into garments that are seemingly normal, and blatantly feminine, but with something that's just a bit off... almost awkward in a way. Oversized peter pan collars and chokers adorned the necks of sullen models, legwarmers that were way too thick were scrunched and pulled up in haphazard ways, and worn with open toe shoes in an array of loud floral prints, and of course the ruffles. Ruffles took over every part of the body, creating ultra girly, and somewhat clumsy silhouettes. But you can tell that a lot of care and detail went into each individual piece, and after viewing this collection, it becomes apparent that the designers really thought about the clothing, and what they wanted to convey to the viewers. Their angsty approach to beauty illustrates that there is strength in being a little tattered and worn. Besides, we're all pretty on the inside.
