Bernhard Willhelm A/W 2010/2011

Anyone who is familiar with German designer Bernhard Willhelm, knows he is nothing if not completely avant-garde, and unabashedly surreal. Willhelm’s Autumn/Winter 2010/2011 collection was no exception. For Paris Fashion Week, Willhelm put together a fashion show that made you feel as if you had just stepped into a very pretentious and artsy gathering full of really cool geniuses who make you feel super out of place. Models were situated around a central object, as they each proceeded to participate in a series of nonsensical movements and activities. One model repeatedly stabs the air with a butcher knife, while another continuously walks in place using some sort of exercise contraption. The viewer becomes overwhelmed with an explosion of beautifully chaotic garments, and bizarre imagery. A spectacle to say the least!

However over the top and reckless the show may have seemed, there was definitely strategic purpose in the clothing. For this collection, Willhelm was inspired by the year of the White Tiger (a.k.a this year). He pays homage to this majestic creature by using Japanese calligraphy and images printed on cottons and silks from Japan. Kimono inspired dresses and a plethora of bright colors and graphics peered out at you from the spectacular set.

It is my belief, that when you wear Willhelm, you become secretly better than everyone else. As if you know something that no one else quite understands yet. But they will… if they’re worth it.
