Flying Nun

Pack your bags kids - We're going to New Zealand! Not only is New Zealand home to some of the most gorgeous scenery in the world, it is also home of Independent record label, Flying Nun records. Flying Nun came about in 1981, and gained notoriety when it started featuring emerging bands from Dunedin, NZ. Bands such as The Chills, The Verlaines, The Clean, The Bats, Tall Dwarfs, and Look Blue Go Purple, are among the few bands to make up what became known as the Dunedin sound (a part of what is also known as 'Kiwi Pop'). Dunedin bands can usually be identified through their lo-fi sound, loose guitar, muddled vocals, minimal bass lines, post punk, punk, and twee pop influences. Add a dash of bands like the Velvet Underground, and The Seeds, and there you have it! Below are some of my favourite songs and vids from this criminally over-looked genre.

  1. Do you make mixes for people? Judging by the little I know about you, I can tell your music tastes are probably stellar, and your knowledge pretty extensive. I'd be interested in hearing what you'd put together for a comp.

  2. Thank you! Up until now, I've only made mixes and playlists for myself as a hobby. But I would be more than happy to make a comp for you.

  3. Playlist done! To access it, just click on the twitter follow me button. There should be a link on my twitter that says 'playlist for ronnie'. Click on that link, and there you go! I have to warn you though, I may have gone overboard. I just got really excited. Hope you like!

  4. Shoot, just seeing this reply now for the first time. Jumping on it. Thanks in advance. I'll give you a 3-page review, double-spaced in no larger than 12pt font within the week.

  5. Strike that. 83 songs! I'm going to dig into this tomorrow morning, when my ears are fresh. Quite impressed just by the sheer quantity.

You'll get something in return for your generous efforts.
